This day is celebrated on 26th November every year as it is the anniversary of the adoption of Constitution by the India Constituent Assembly in 1949.
History of National Law Day
After thirty years of November 26, 1949, the Supreme Court Bas Association declared this day as National Law Day. Since then, this day is celebrated as Law Day throughout India, especially members of the legal fraternity. National Law Day is celebrated to provide honour to the 207 eminent members of the Constituent Assembly who have contributed to the Constitution of India since its foundation.
In 2013, Indian National Bar Association (INBA) organized a two-day (26th and 27th November) international conference at India International Centre to celebrate the National Law Day. Participants included Hon’ble Judges, Senior Government Officials, Lawyers of Fortune 500 companies, International and National Law Companies, from the planet. This conference is aimed as to provide a base for Legal Community related to industrialization. They also discuss on various crucial national and international legal issues.
Objectives of National Law Day
According to the President, Supreme Court Bar Association, the main objectives of celebrating Law Day is to recognize the important principles which formed the basis of the Constitution. These principles include the rule of law, independence of the Judiciary and the independence of legal profession.
Law in integration with Constitution
The Supreme Court (SC) supports the goals of the Constitution. This Court is the defender of the Constitution and the principles laid down, human rights, and peace. It has always responded to the changes within the society and moved with its pace. It has intervened to protect democracy, human rights and to honour the rule of law. Through Article 21 of the Constitution, it has given more information and purpose to the law.
The SC has protected the values of secularism and respected the sentiments of all caste and creeds. The Court is an independent judiciary, under the scheme of the Constitution, and it has played a good role in acting as a vigilant officer through various legislatures and executive directives. The most important and big contribution of the SC has been to uphold the Constitution by streamlining the role of the three organs of the State.
Hence, the Indian judiciary has been a strong pillar of constitutional democracy. During the celebration of the National Law Day, the memorable speech given by the first Chief Justice of India, Sir Harilal J. Kania at the inaugural ceremony of the SC on January 28, 1950 is always remembered.
The Constitution has experienced an interesting 63 years since the 284 affixed their signatures on January 26 1950. It gave emergence to the Constituent Assembly Members’ Association (Dreams and Realities) to protect their activities.
In India, Law Enforcement is run by various law enforcement agencies. The Constitution of India has given the responsibility to the state and territories. Many agencies are part of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and support the states and territories in their duties, at the federal level.
